In the heart of Latimer County, the Wilburton Alumni Banquet stands as a shining example of the cherished traditions that define small-town America. This beloved annual gathering brings together generations of alumni, fostering an enduring sense of community and connection that dates back over a century. Alumni weekend in Wilburton always coincides with Easter weekend and will be held on April 19 this year.
Founded in 1915, the Wilburton Alumni Association has the distinction of being the longest-running alumni association in the nation to meet consecutively. Since its inception, this dedicated group has upheld the tradition of reuniting Wilburton High School graduates year after year, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to keeping the bonds of friendship and school pride alive.
Each spring, the alumni association sends out nearly 1,000 bulletins to former students, inviting them to partake in a weekend filled with nostalgia, laughter, and celebration. This year, between 250 and 350 alumni are expected to return to Wilburton to reconnect with old friends, share fond memories, and create new ones.
The weekend’s festivities offer something for everyone. From the Brock Anderson 5K, which raises scholarship funds, to the pancake breakfast, softball games, cornhole tournaments, and more, the event is a vibrant showcase of community spirit. Alumni celebrating milestone reunions—like their 5th, 10th, or 25th—gather for special class-specific events, ensuring that each generation of graduates has an opportunity to reminisce and celebrate together.
A true highlight of the weekend is the annual banquet, where a delicious dinner sets the stage for an evening of camaraderie and recognition. The famous “roll call of classes” never fails to spark friendly rivalry and spirited applause as alumni from decades past proudly stand to be recognized. The banquet also honors the achievements of incoming seniors, with small scholarships presented to the valedictorian, salutatorian, outstanding senior, and another exceptional graduate chosen by the alumni. Additionally, awards are given to outstanding male and female athletes of the year, as well as honorees for the Sports Hall of Fame, Teacher Hall of Fame, and the prestigious George Giacomo Award.
The Wilburton Alumni Banquet is more than just an event; it’s a testament to the enduring strength of community ties and the power of shared history. In a world that often feels fast-paced and disconnected, this gathering serves as a heartwarming reminder of what makes small-town America truly special. It’s a time to laugh, reminisce, and celebrate the bonds that connect us to our roots.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident of Latimer County or returning to Wilburton after years away, the Alumni Banquet is a chance to come home—to rediscover the joys of high school days, reconnect with those who knew you best, and be a part of a legacy that stretches back over a century. It’s a weekend you won’t want to miss.
